James Dixon Works as a history teacher at a university. He has a contract for 2 years, but he fears he will be fired, because he does not perform well. He does not feel at home at the university. At a party at the professor, who guides him, he meets his son, a painter, and his girlfriend. Dixon immediately dislikes the pompous Bertrand. But he finds Bertrand’s girlfriend, Christine, very attractive. Bertrand would like to get a job with the famous artist Gore-Urquhart. Dixon does not wish Bertrand well and after many happenings Dixon obtains everything that Bertrand had, without having to do anything for it: Christine; the job with Gore-Urquhart. He gets out of his problems and Bertrand is in deep trouble.
Then there is also Margaret. Dixon does not really like Margaret, but he feels he has to take care of her. She has tried before to commit suicide and is therefore a little unstable. Margaret tries to give everyone a guilty feeling towards her. When she tried to commit ‘suicide’ she knew exactly how many sleeping pills to take to be rescued in time. On that specific night she had invited Dixon over, to make sure that she would be found. However, when Dixon finds out about the setup, he does not feel guilty any more and feels free to pursue Christine.
